NEW DELHI, 23 JUNE: Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, the Indian missions in Israel and Jordan successfully evacuated 160 Indian nationals from Israel under the first batch of ‘Operation Sindhu’. The airspace in Israel was closed and commercial flights suspended due to rising hostilities and the threat of missile and drone attacks from Iran, making the operation a challenging endeavor for the authorities.
According to an embassy source, the group comprised Indian nationals who had been living in Israel and were grappling with frequent air-raid sirens and alerts. As tensions rose, many sought refuge in bunkers and fortified safe rooms from the looming threat of incoming attacks. In response to the deteriorating security situation, the Government of India acted swiftly and launched ‘Operation Sindhu’ to ensure the safety and safe passage of its citizens.
“The first group of 160 Indian nationals evacuated from Israel have successfully crossed the Israel–Jordan border and are now safe in Jordan,”. The operation was conducted through meticulous coordination between the Indian Embassy in Israel and the Indian Embassy in Jordan, ensuring a seamless passage for the evacuees.
In Jordan, the evacuated nationals have been given temporary accommodation and assistance. The embassy staff in Amman have worked round the clock to provide all necessary support, including food, medical attention, and help with further travel arrangements.
The successful evacuation marks the first batch of many anticipated under ‘Operation Sindhu’, which aims to rescue and repatriate Indian citizens from Israel and surrounding areas if tensions continue to escalate. The initiative reflects the Indian government’s commitment to the safety and well‑being of its citizens, regardless of the challenging circumstances.
As the situation evolves, Indian authorities have announced that further batches of nationals will be evacuated in the coming days. Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs has urged Indian citizens to adhere to official advisories and remain in touch with the missions for timely updates and support.
