NEW DELHI, 21 JUNE: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta participated in International Yoga Day celebrations on Saturday, joining students and boat club members for a unique yoga session conducted on boats floating along the Yamuna River. The event was part of the nationwide effort to mark the 11th International Day of Yoga and underscored the state’s ongoing commitment to cleaning the river.

“As we stand here and practice yoga by the Yamuna, we send a strong message that the work of cleaning the river is ongoing,” said CM Gupta, addressing reporters. Criticising the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for ignoring the Yamuna’s plight for years, she said, “For years, the river has been neglected by those in power. They didn’t do the work that was needed. Since we assumed office, efforts to clean the Yamuna have gained momentum. Very soon, we will have cruises and recreational boats plying this river.”

The CM also took a swipe at AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal for trying to link yoga celebrations with politics. “If he sees PM Modi’s face in yoga, what can we do? Perhaps if he finds PM Modi’s face in his meals, he might even stop eating! After seeing the BJP’s rise in Delhi, he left the city,” she quipped.
The yoga session featured students and boat club members demonstrating yoga asanas and breathing exercises from platforms and boats on the river. The initiative drew participation from leaders across party lines, including Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra and BJP MP Manoj Tiwari.

The 2025 International Day of Yoga, celebrated under the theme “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” highlights the vital link between personal well‑being and planetary health. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led a massive yoga gathering in Visakhapatnam, where more than three lakh people came together to reaffirm that yoga is for everyone, regardless of boundaries or age.
According to a United Nations statement, yoga strengthens the body, calms the mind, and fosters an increased sense of awareness and responsibility in daily life. In 2014, June 21 was designated as International Day of Yoga by the United Nations, following a resolution introduced by PM Modi and endorsed by 175 member nations.
With leaders and citizens alike embracing this annual global observance, CM Rekha Gupta emphasized that yoga will continue to be a force for health, peace, and environmental consciousness across Delhi and beyond.
