New Delhi, June 21: In a vibrant display of unity and wellness, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla today spearheaded a group yoga session alongside Members of Parliament and parliamentary staff on the premises of the Parliament house. The event, centred around the ethos of International Day of Yoga, drew enthusiastic participation and reaffirmed the importance of holistic health in public life.

Kicking off the early-morning programme, Mr Birla, donned in traditional white attire symbolising peace and purity, joined approximately 134 MPs along with officers from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha secretariats, as they performed a curated routine of asanas in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue. The session was guided by experienced yoga instructors, promoting physical well-being and mental calm.

Addressing media representatives, Speaker Birla underscored yoga’s transformative impact, lauding it as a prescription for creating “a healthy and energetic nation.” He expressed hope that yoga would evolve into a mass movement, uniting citizens and leaders alike through shared practice.

Reflecting on India’s democratic spirit, Birla noted that the nation’s 91 crore voters—including 44 crore women—had affirmed their faith in democratic frameworks, even in the face of challenging weather conditions. He stated that Parliament, mirroring this democratic vibrancy, must uphold transparency and accountability with dignity, offering equal voice to first-time members on its floor.
The session, held in conjunction with global observances of yoga, reinforced the Parliament’s commitment to fostering wellness and mindfulness among India’s political leadership. As the nation moves forward, the Speaker’s gesture serves as a reminder that mental and physical health are foundational to effective governance and public service.
