Delhi Assembly to Honour National Icons with Portraits of Veer Savarkar, Dayanand Saraswati & Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya.

New Delhi, May 21, 2025 – The Delhi Legislative Assembly will soon install portraits of three iconic national figures — Veer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati, and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya — within the Assembly complex. The decision was taken during a meeting of the General Purposes Committee chaired by Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta.

The resolution, passed unanimously, aims to recognise and celebrate the contributions of these prominent leaders to India’s freedom struggle, social reform, and educational advancement. The committee emphasized that commemorating their legacy in the Vidhan Sabha would inspire future generations and serve as a powerful reminder of India’s rich intellectual, cultural, and moral heritage.

The proposal was submitted by Abhay Verma, a member of the committee, who highlighted the profound impact of these leaders in shaping India’s national identity. “Their values of patriotism, reform, and education are deeply embedded in our history. Installing their portraits is a tribute to those ideals,” he stated.

The committee specifically resolved to include a portrait of Veer Savarkar, noting his widely acknowledged role in India’s freedom movement. Members of the committee pointed out that the Delhi Assembly has traditionally honoured prominent freedom fighters through portrait installations, and Savarkar’s inclusion aligns with that tradition.

Other members present in the meeting included Deputy Speaker Mohan Singh Bisht, Chaudhary Zubair Ahmad, Manoj Kumar Shokeen, Raj Kumar Bhatia, Tilak Ram Gupta, and Veer Singh Dhingan.

Speaker Vijender Gupta remarked that the Assembly is committed to preserving the memory and values of national heroes who contributed immensely to the country’s democratic and cultural foundations. “This unanimous decision reaffirms our collective dedication to instilling national pride and civic responsibility among the citizens of Delhi,” he said.

The portraits are expected to be unveiled in a formal ceremony at the Delhi Vidhan Sabha in the coming weeks.
