COVID Cases Rise in Singapore, HK: Govt Issues Advisory, Urges Calm

New Delhi May 19: Amid rising concerns over increasing COVID-19 cases in Singapore and Hong Kong, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda  assured the public there is no cause for panic, while directing officials to ramp up emergency preparedness across the country.

The Minister chaired a high-level meeting to review India’s emergency health system readiness in light of the regional spike in cases, which are reportedly not life-threatening. He emphasized the importance of preventive action and coordination at all levels to avoid any potential impact on India.

According to an official release, the Health Ministry has undertaken urgent and comprehensive steps to strengthen the national healthcare infrastructure. This includes ensuring the availability of critical medical supplies, hospital beds, oxygen, and trauma care kits across government facilities.

The current status of emergency preparedness was presented during the meeting. Key updates included the deployment of ambulances, readiness of ICUs and HDUs, and availability of blood, medicines, and medical consumables. The Ministry has also positioned BHISHM Cubes and advanced mobile trauma care units for quick response during emergencies.

Hospitals and medical institutions have been directed to ensure adequate stocks of essential drugs, blood supplies, oxygen cylinders, and other lifesaving resources. AIIMS New Delhi and other central hospitals have mobilized medical teams with supplies ready for deployment if needed.

The Minister instructed officials to establish ground-level linkages with state governments, district administrations, armed forces, and private healthcare providers. Regional associations of doctors, nurses, and paramedics have also been urged to collaborate in strengthening the emergency response network.

In preparation for any exigency, mock drills have been conducted nationwide at institutions like AIIMS, PGIMER, and JIPMER. These drills aim to assess and improve hospital readiness and emergency response protocols.

To further enhance emergency healthcare capacity, the Ministry is rolling out training modules on CPR, first aid, and basic life support. These programs are being developed with support from the Indian Red Cross Society, NIHFW, AIIMS, and the iGOT platform.

Union Health Secretary also briefed the Minister about her series of meetings with state and UT officials to ensure seamless coordination and effective preparedness at every level of the health system.
