Ajit Doval, Iranian Security Chief Push for Rapid Chabahar Port Development

New Delhi, May 19:  Amid heightened tensions with Pakistan and the temporary closure of the Attari-Wagah land border crossing, India and Iran have reaffirmed their strategic cooperation, with a strong focus on expediting the development of the Chabahar Port and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).

In a significant phone conversation, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval held talks with his Iranian counterpart, Ali Akbar Ahmadian, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. The two security chiefs discussed deepening bilateral cooperation in key areas, particularly infrastructure and connectivity projects that hold importance not only for their nations but for regional stability and economic integration.

NSA Doval emphasized India’s keen interest in swiftly developing the Chabahar Port and advancing the INSTC—a strategic transit route linking India with Central Asia, Russia, and Europe via Iran. He also extended his gratitude to Iran for its consistent support and cooperation in the Chabahar initiative, which New Delhi views as a crucial element of its regional connectivity vision.

Doval noted that Iran plays a pivotal and constructive role in regional geopolitics, and that the partnership between the two ancient civilizations—India and Iran—needs to be further strengthened, especially in trade and economic sectors. “India believes that deepening our relations is in the mutual interest of both nations and serves the security of the broader region,” he stated.

Responding positively, Ahmadian echoed similar sentiments, reaffirming Iran’s commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation. He highlighted that the shared historical and cultural bonds between the two countries create a solid foundation for future political and economic collaboration.

The Iranian security chief underscored the urgency of implementing key infrastructure projects such as the Chabahar Port and INSTC in the shortest possible timeframe. He stated that these initiatives are not only vital for bilateral trade but are also instrumental in promoting regional peace, stability, and economic connectivity.

The reaffirmation of Chabahar’s strategic importance comes at a time when India seeks to diversify its regional trade routes, especially in light of volatile borders and shifting geopolitical dynamics. Both leaders agreed to maintain close coordination to ensure the successful and timely execution of these projects, underscoring their shared vision of fostering a secure and interconnected region.
