IAEA Dismisses Reports of Radiation Leak at Pakistan Nuclear Site

New Delhi : Amid swirling rumours and media speculation regarding a potential radiation leak from a nuclear facility at Kirana Hills in Pakistan, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed that no such incident has been reported or detected. The clarification follows days after India categorically denied any strike on the alleged nuclear site during its recent military campaign, Operation Sindoor.

A spokesperson for the global nuclear watchdog responded to a query related to the incident, stating: “We are aware of the reports you are referring to. Based on information available to the IAEA, there has been no radiation leak or release from any nuclear facility in Pakistan.”

The IAEA’s Incident and Emergency Centre, which monitors nuclear safety and radiation-related emergencies globally, had received no formal alerts or indicators suggesting any breach or radiation exposure in the region. The statement serves as a rebuttal to social media chatter and unverified reports that suggested a potential radiation emergency following Indian airstrikes on targets within Pakistan.

Director General of Air Operations (DGAO) Air Marshal A.K. Bharti also dismissed reports that the Indian Armed Forces targeted any nuclear facility during Operation Sindoor. He stated categorically that Indian forces had “no intention or directive to strike nuclear infrastructure” and emphasized that all military actions were carefully calibrated to avoid escalation and civilian risk.

Kirana Hills, located in Pakistan’s Punjab province, has long been believed to host sensitive nuclear development and storage facilities. However, both India and the IAEA have now clarified that these reports of a strike and any resulting radiation leak are unfounded.

Defense analysts note that the quick and firm response by both India and the IAEA reflects a desire to prevent misinformation from escalating tensions in an already fragile regional environment. Experts also highlighted the critical role played by agencies like the IAEA in maintaining transparency and trust in international nuclear oversight.

Pakistan’s government has not officially commented on the matter beyond routine statements issued in response to Operation Sindoor. Meanwhile, India continues to maintain that its air operations were precise, targeted, and in line with international norms.
