Delhi 14 may : prestigious ceremony held today at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Justice Gavai, who succeeds Justice Sanjiv Khanna in the nation’s highest judicial position.
The event was marked by the presence of several dignitaries, including Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and members of the Union Cabinet. Former Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who retired after a distinguished tenure, was also present at the ceremony to extend his best wishes to his successor.
Career and Legacy of Chief Justice Gavai
Justice Gavai, who takes charge at the helm of the judiciary, will serve as the Chief Justice for six months, with his tenure concluding in November, just before his retirement. A seasoned jurist, Justice Gavai’s career began in 1985, when he joined the Bar and started practicing before the Bombay High Court. His remarkable rise through the ranks saw him appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in 2003, and he was made a permanent judge in 2005. In 2019, he was elevated to the Supreme Court, where he gained prominence for his legal acumen and impartiality.
As a judge of the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Gavai has been part of several landmark rulings that have shaped India’s legal landscape. Notably, he was part of the bench that upheld the Centre’s 2016 demonetisation decision, a significant judgment that had widespread ramifications. Justice Gavai also played a key role in striking down the electoral bonds scheme as unconstitutional, a decision that resonated strongly in the realm of political transparency.
Over the years, Justice Gavai has authored around 300 judgments, many of which were delivered by Constitution Benches and have dealt with critical matters related to fundamental rights, constitutional law, and political reforms.
