New Delhi, May 3 :President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives in a stampede at Shirgao, Goa.
In a post on X, President Murmu said, “Sad to know about the unfortunate incident of a stampede in Shirgao, Goa which claimed several lives. I extend my condolences to bereaved family members and pray for quick recovery of the injured.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, through the official PMO India handle, conveyed his condolences, stating, “Saddened by the loss of lives due to a stampede in Shirgao, Goa. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. The local administration is assisting those affected.”
The tragic incident occurred during the annual Lairai Devi Jatra, a popular religious procession at the Lairai temple in Shirgao, situated in North Goa. The event, which attracts thousands of devotees every year, turned chaotic in the early hours of Saturday when a sudden rush of people led to a deadly stampede.
According to local officials, at least six people lost their lives, and over 30 devotees sustained injuries. Many of the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, where they are currently undergoing treatment. The condition of several injured individuals is reported to be critical.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant expressed his grief over the incident and assured that the state government is extending all possible assistance to the victims and their families. “We are closely monitoring the situation, and necessary steps are being taken to ensure proper treatment for the injured,” he said.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the stampede. Meanwhile, additional security measures are being put in place to manage the crowd during the remainder of the festivities.
