PM Modi Interacts with Beneficiaries as MUDRA Yojana Completes a Decade

Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacts with beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY) today in New Delhi to mark the 10th anniversary of the flagship financial inclusion initiative. The event is scheduled to be broadcast at 9 AM and will showcase stories of transformation and empowerment enabled by the scheme over the past decade.

Launched in April 2015, the MUDRA Yojana was conceived with the aim of providing collateral-free loans of up to ₹10 lakh to non-corporate, non-farm, small and micro enterprises across the country. The initiative is designed to support aspiring entrepreneurs, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds, by making access to formal credit simpler and more inclusive.

Over the past 10 years, the scheme has sanctioned more than 52 crore loans, amounting to over ₹32 lakh crore, according to official data. A significant share of these loans—68%—have been availed by women entrepreneurs, while over 50% of the beneficiaries belong to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC). These figures underline the scheme’s role in not only promoting entrepreneurship but also advancing social equity and economic empowerment.

In his address, Prime Minister Modi is expected to highlight how the MUDRA Yojana has played a crucial role in supporting India’s micro-enterprise ecosystem and generating self-employment opportunities. Beneficiaries from across the country will share their experiences and success stories, demonstrating the scheme’s impact in enabling people to start or expand businesses in fields such as retail, services, manufacturing, and trade.

The scheme operates under three categories—Shishu (up to ₹50,000), Kishore (₹50,000 to ₹5 lakh), and Tarun (₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh)—based on the stage of development and funding needs of the business. Loans are provided by various financial institutions, including banks, microfinance institutions, and non-banking financial companies.

As India continues its journey towards becoming a $5 trillion economy, schemes like the MUDRA Yojana are seen as vital tools for fostering grassroots entrepreneurship and ensuring inclusive growth.
