PM Modi leaves for Bangkok to participate in the BIMSTEC Summit, will also travel to Sri Lanka.

New Delhi, April, 3,2025 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on an official visit to Bangkok, Thailand, early today to participate in the Sixth BIMSTEC Summit. Before departing, he expressed his eagerness to engage with the leaders of BIMSTEC nations and strengthen regional collaboration among the Bay of Bengal littoral countries.

In a statement ahead of his departure, PM Modi highlighted the significance of BIMSTEC as a key platform for fostering regional development, connectivity, and economic progress. He also emphasized the strategic role of India’s North Eastern region, which lies at the heart of the BIMSTEC framework.

During his Thailand visit, the Prime Minister is scheduled to hold discussions with his counterpart, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, focusing on enhancing bilateral ties rooted in a shared cultural and spiritual heritage.

Following his engagements in Bangkok, PM Modi will travel to Sri Lanka from April 4 to 6, marking a crucial visit to the island nation. The visit comes after Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka’s successful trip to India last December. The two leaders will review the progress of their joint vision for ‘Fostering Partnerships for a Shared Future’ and explore new avenues for cooperation.

Expressing confidence in the outcomes of his visit, PM Modi stated:

“These visits will build on the strong foundations of the past and further strengthen our close relationships for the benefit of our people and the wider region.”

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also reaffirmed the significance of the trip, stating on X (formerly Twitter):

“PM @narendramodi departs for Thailand & Sri Lanka. He will attend the 6th BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok and later proceed on a State Visit to Sri Lanka to advance bilateral cooperation.”

The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is a regional grouping comprising Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, aimed at fostering multi-sectoral collaboration among member nations.

PM Modi’s visits to Thailand and Sri Lanka underscore India’s commitment to regional cooperation, connectivity, and economic growth, reinforcing its leadership role in the Bay of Bengal region.
