Uttarakhand Uniform Civil Code Bill receives Presidential Approval, becomes Law

Dehradun, March 13,2024– President Droupadi Murmu has granted approval to the Uttarakhand Uniform Civil Code Bill, turning it into law. The bill, which was passed by the state Assembly on February 7, signifies a significant milestone as Uttarakhand becomes the first state post-independence to enact a Uniform Civil Code.

The formalization of the law was announced through a notification issued by Uttarakhand Governor Major General (Retd) Gurmeet Singh on Wednesday.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his delight on Twitter, stating, “It is a moment of great joy and pride for all the people of the state that President Droupadi Murmu ji has given her assent to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill passed by the BJP government in the Uttarakhand Assembly.”

Dhami highlighted the importance of the UCC in promoting social equality and mitigating harassment against women. He expressed confidence that the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code will ensure equal rights for all citizens, fostering harmony in the state.

The enactment of the UCC in Uttarakhand is anticipated to have widespread ramifications, potentially setting a precedent for other states to follow suit in upholding principles of equality and justice.
