Big Boost for Govt Employees & Pensioners: Cabinet Approves Additional DA Hike

New Delhi, March 28, 2025: The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday sanctioned the release of an extra instalment of Dearness Allowance (DA) for Central Government employees and Dearness Relief (DR) for pensioners, effective from January 1, 2025. This marks a 2 per cent hike over the prevailing rate of 53 per cent of the Basic Pay or Pension, aimed at mitigating the impact of inflation.

Announcing the decision at a press briefing post the cabinet meeting, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the move will benefit approximately 48.66 lakh Central Government employees and 66.55 lakh pensioners. The cumulative financial burden on the exchequer due to the DA and DR hike is estimated at Rs 6,614.04 crore annually. The adjustment follows the prescribed formula recommended by the Seventh Central Pay Commission, as per an official statement.

In another key move, the Union Cabinet approved the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme, allocating Rs 22,919 crore to boost India’s self-reliance in the electronics supply chain. The initiative aims to foster a robust domestic component ecosystem by attracting substantial global and local investments in electronics manufacturing, enhancing Domestic Value Addition (DVA), and integrating Indian firms into global supply networks.

The scheme is projected to bring in investments worth Rs 59,350 crore, drive production worth Rs 4,56,500 crore, and create around 91,600 direct jobs, along with numerous indirect employment opportunities. Given that electronics is among the most dynamic and heavily traded industries worldwide, this initiative is expected to significantly contribute to India’s economic growth and technological advancement.
