MOSCOW, March 27,2025: Russian President Vladimir Putin has accepted an invitation from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit India, with preparations currently in progress, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced on Thursday.
Speaking via video message at a conference titled “Russia and India: Toward a New Bilateral Agenda”, organized by the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), Lavrov highlighted the strengthening ties between the two nations.
“Arrangements are being made for President Putin’s official visit to India,” Lavrov stated. He further reiterated Russia’s commitment to deepening its strategic partnership with India, underscoring that both nations are collaborating on multiple fronts to enhance bilateral cooperation.
The state-run TASS news agency also quoted Lavrov as saying, “President Putin has accepted the Indian Prime Minister’s invitation, and we are currently preparing for his visit to the Republic of India.”
The upcoming visit is expected to reinforce long-standing diplomatic, economic, and defense ties between India and Russia. The two countries share a robust strategic partnership, encompassing cooperation in energy, trade, defense, space, and technology.
Over the past few years, both nations have continued diplomatic engagements despite global geopolitical shifts. Moscow and New Delhi have actively collaborated in the defense sector, with India being a key importer of Russian military equipment. Additionally, energy trade has seen a significant boost, with India increasing its imports of Russian crude oil amid changing global supply dynamics.
During Putin’s visit, both leaders are expected to discuss bilateral trade agreements, defense partnerships, and regional security issues, particularly in the context of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the Indo-Pacific region.
According to diplomatic sources, key topics that might feature in the discussions include:
Economic and Trade Relations: Strengthening bilateral trade, increasing cooperation in emerging technologies, digital infrastructure, and energy security.
Defense and Security Ties: Discussions on the delivery of Russian defense systems, joint military exercises, and furthering Indo-Russian defense cooperation.
Energy Cooperation: Ensuring a stable oil and gas supply, potential agreements in the nuclear energy sector, and renewable energy collaborations.
Geopolitical Issues: Dialogue on global security concerns, Russia’s stance on the Indo-Pacific, and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
BRICS and Global Partnerships: Enhancing multilateral cooperation through organizations like BRICS, SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation), and the G20.
Putin’s upcoming visit marks another chapter in the long-standing Russia-India partnership, which has remained resilient despite global challenges. Both countries are likely to emphasize greater collaboration in strategic sectors, reinforcing their historical friendship and diplomatic cooperation.
While an official date for Putin’s visit to India has yet to be announced, diplomatic sources indicate that the trip could take place later this year. The visit is expected to pave the way for new agreements, further solidifying the Indo-Russian alliance.
India and Russia have maintained a time-tested relationship, and Putin’s upcoming trip is set to reaffirm their commitment to strengthening ties across various domains.
