Prayagraj– In a groundbreaking achievement, the North Central Railway Central Hospital, Prayagraj, successfully conducted its first laparoscopic kidney removal surgery. A 57-year-old patient, Chanda Devi from Pratapgarh, had been suffering from a severely damaged right kidney due to large kidney stones and recurrent infections, which caused her unbearable pain and fever. After careful evaluation, the medical team decided to perform a minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery to remove the damaged kidney.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Abhishek Shukla, a urologist, and Dr. Sanjay Kumar, a senior surgeon at North Central Railway, under the supervision of Dr. Shabi Ahmad, the former Head of the Medical College. The entire procedure was completed in just 90 minutes using laparoscopic techniques, which allowed the removal of the kidney through small incisions without the need for major surgical cuts. This technique, performed successfully for the first time in the railway hospital, marks a significant advancement in medical care for railway employees and the general public.

Laparoscopic surgery offers several advantages over traditional open surgery, as it causes less pain, ensures a faster recovery, results in minimal scarring, and significantly reduces hospital stay and blood loss. The patient, Chanda Devi, had been struggling with kidney stone-related issues for a long time but had not sought proper medical attention. Instead, she relied on local healers and unqualified practitioners, which led to further complications. Dr. Abhishek Shukla stressed the importance of consulting a qualified doctor for kidney-related problems, as negligence and ignorance in seeking timely treatment can sometimes lead to the loss of an organ.

The success of this operation has brought immense relief to Chanda Devi and her family, who had been deeply concerned about her deteriorating health. Recognizing the efforts of the surgical team, the Medical Director, Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Handu, extended his heartfelt congratulations to the doctors and supporting staff for their commendable work. The operation was made possible with the expertise of senior anesthesiologists Dr. Alok Yadav and Dr. Pragati Pandey, along with the dedicated contributions of Manju Devi Sonkar, Chief Nursing Superintendent, Senior Nursing Superintendent Harish Kumar Sharma, Nursing Superintendent Preeti, Abhishek Gladwin, Dresser Amit Shukla, Aarti Prasad, Manmohan Lal, Hospital Assistant Moolchand, Rajendra Kumar Tiwari, Rekha Singh, Lavkush and Romesh Kumar, Sarrifuddin, Geeta Devi etc. played an important role.

This landmark surgery signifies a new era in medical advancements at railway hospitals, setting a precedent for future complex surgeries using minimally invasive techniques. It not only highlights the capabilities of the hospital’s medical team but also brings hope to patients requiring specialized treatments, ensuring they receive world-class healthcare services within the railway medical system.
