Indian Railways on Track to Achieve Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2025, Leading India’s Green Transport Revolution

New Delhi, 18 March 2025: Indian Railways (IR) is committed to achieve Net Zero Carbon Emitter Status ahead of commitment for Bharat. Scope-I is Carbon emissions is categorized into ‘Direct Emissions’.
IR has made significant strides in reducing direct emissions by way of game changer step of shift from diesel traction to electric traction. IR is implementing various energy efficiency measures in its operation and maintenance.
Already, 97% traction is on electric, which is further increasing with the completion of minor balanced electrification (i.e. 3% only).
This enables IR to achieve Net Zero (Scope –I) target within the year 2025, as minuscule direct emissions are already lesser than carbon off set available with IR in terms of model shift (from road to rail) and afforestation.
In addition, to that Indian Railways is progressively sourcing power from non-fossil fuel-based sources instead of fossil fuel based, which will further reduce even the indirect emissions.
IR is leading and highest contributor in making Indian transportation sector greener by way of providing not only less carbon emitter transportation option compared to road sector but also by feeding this green transport through green power sources.
