India-Madagascar Strengthen Bilateral Ties: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Highlights Partnership

New Delhi, March 12, 2025: Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla reaffirmed India’s strong and historic relationship with Madagascar, describing the nation as a “cherished and reliable friend” and a crucial partner in regional progress. Addressing a bilateral meeting with a Parliamentary Delegation from Madagascar, led by the President of the National Assembly H.E. Mr. Justin Tokely, Shri Birla emphasized that Madagascar plays a key role in India’s “SAGAR” (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision. The meeting took place today at the Parliament House premises in New Delhi.

Shri Birla highlighted India’s commitment to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) efforts in Madagascar, showcasing India’s role in supporting various socio-economic projects in the region. He also acknowledged the significant contributions of the Indian diaspora in Madagascar, which has played a vital role in strengthening bilateral relations.

A key moment in the discussions was the mention of the first-ever ‘Jaipur Foot Camp’ in Madagascar, where hundreds of differently-abled individuals were provided with artificial limbs, reflecting India’s commitment to humanitarian initiatives.

Shri Birla also emphasized India’s democratic heritage, calling it the “Mother of Democracy.” He noted that voter participation in India has steadily increased since its first general election in 1952, reaching nearly 66% turnout in the 2024 general elections, a testament to the growing faith of the Indian populace in democracy. He briefed the delegation on the functioning of the Indian Parliament and the ongoing Budget Session.

Highlighting India’s role in parliamentary training, Shri Birla expressed willingness to organize capacity-building and training programmes for Madagascar’s parliamentarians through the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies (PRIDE). He noted that regular parliamentary exchanges would foster a deeper understanding of legislative processes between the two nations.

H.E. Mr. Justin Tokely expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality extended by the Indian Parliament and praised India’s rapid economic growth and advancements in technology. He emphasized shared interests between India and Madagascar in agriculture, maritime security, health, and education, while expressing hope for closer economic, parliamentary, and cultural cooperation between the two nations.

The visiting delegation also attended Lok Sabha proceedings today, where Speaker Om Birla formally welcomed them on behalf of the Members of the House.

This meeting marks a significant step in deepening India-Madagascar relations, reinforcing diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties between the two nations.
