Islamabad, Mar 12,2025: Pakistani security forces successfully eliminated at least 16 militants and rescued 104 passengers after armed insurgents hijacked a train in the volatile Balochistan province. Security operations stretched into the second day on Wednesday as forces continued to engage insurgents.
The Jaffar Express, carrying nearly 500 passengers across nine coaches, was en route from Quetta to Peshawar when it was intercepted by heavily armed attackers in a tunnel near the rugged terrain of Gudalar and Piru Kunri in the Bolan region on Tuesday afternoon.
Following the attack, the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the hijacking. The insurgent group, known for its armed resistance against the Pakistani state, has carried out multiple attacks in the region over the years, citing grievances over resource control and autonomy.
Eyewitnesses reported scenes of panic as the gunmen stormed the train, taking several passengers hostage and engaging in a prolonged standoff with security forces. In response, Pakistani authorities launched a swift counter-operation, deploying elite commandos and aerial surveillance to neutralize the threat.
By Wednesday morning, security forces had regained control of the train, eliminating 16 militants and rescuing 104 passengers unharmed. The remaining passengers were also evacuated safely as authorities continued clearance operations in the area.
Officials praised the military’s swift action in preventing further casualties. “The successful operation demonstrates our resolve against terrorism,” a senior security official stated.
The incident underscores the persistent security challenges in Balochistan, where separatist groups frequently target infrastructure and state forces. Authorities have intensified counter-insurgency efforts in the region to curb further attacks.
