Gyanesh Kumar Takes Charge as New CEC, Vows Transparent Elections

New Delhi, Feb 19, 2025: Former senior bureaucrat Gyanesh Kumar officially assumed office as India’s 26th Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) on Wednesday, succeeding Rajiv Kumar, who held the position for more than two years.

In his inaugural address, Gyanesh Kumar emphasized the importance of active participation in the democratic process, particularly urging the country’s youth to take responsibility for voting. He called voting the foundational act of service to the nation and encouraged all eligible citizens to exercise their franchise.

“Casting your vote is the first step toward contributing to the nation’s progress. Every Indian who has reached the age of 18 must enroll as a voter and make their voice heard,” Shri Kumar remarked, underlining the significance of inclusive and fair elections.

He reassured the public that the Election Commission remains steadfast in its commitment to uphold the democratic principles enshrined in the Constitution of India. “The Election Commission has always stood by the voters and will continue to do so, in line with the Constitution, the Representation of the People Act, relevant rules, and established guidelines,” he affirmed.

Shri Kumar’s appointment comes at a crucial time, with several state elections and the General Elections on the horizon. His vision focuses on enhancing voter turnout, strengthening electoral infrastructure, and ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections.

As he steps into this pivotal role, Kumar expressed confidence in the Election Commission’s ability to meet emerging challenges and safeguard the integrity of India’s electoral system. He also acknowledged the efforts of his predecessor, Rajiv Kumar, for his dedication and contributions to the Commission.

The new Chief Election Commissioner’s message serves as a clarion call to the nation’s youth, reminding them that their participation is not just a right but a duty towards building a stronger democracy. With his extensive administrative experience and clear vision, Gyanesh Kumar aims to lead the Election Commission with fairness, transparency, and unwavering commitment to the people of India.
