Indian Army Commemorates 77th Army Day with Grand Celebration in Pune

Pune (Maharashtra), January 15, 2025: The Indian Army celebrated its 77th Army Day on Wednesday at the Bombay Engineers Group and Centre Parade Ground in Pune. This marks the third time the Army Day Parade has been held outside Delhi, following the decision to host this prestigious event in different parts of the country. For the Southern Command, it is the second time the parade has taken place under its jurisdiction, with the first being in Bengaluru in 2023.

The event began with a Wreath Laying ceremony at the Command War Memorial, where General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), paid tribute to the fallen soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation.

The ceremony was attended by several military and civil dignitaries, including General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff, Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani, Vice Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Command, Lt Gen Pawan Chadha, General Officer Commanding, Maharashtra, Gujarat & Goa Area, among other esteemed guests, including foreign dignitaries.

General Upendra Dwivedi, as the Reviewing Officer, took the salute during the remarkable parade, which was commanded by Major General Anurag Vij, General Officer Commanding, Dhakshin Maharashtra and Goa Sub Area.

The 77th Army Day Parade was distinguished by the presentation of 52 prestigious awards. Among these were 15 Sena Medals (Gallantry), including 8 posthumous awards, and 37 Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Unit Appreciations, recognizing the exceptional service and bravery of army personnel.

In his address, General Dwivedi extended his warm wishes to all ranks of the Indian Army, their families, veterans, war widows, and civil defense personnel. He paid homage to the brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice for the country’s defense and assured their families of the army’s unwavering commitment to their well-being.

General Dwivedi emphasized that this year’s Army Day Parade in Pune holds significant historical importance, highlighting the region’s rich military heritage. He expressed pride in the dedication of soldiers who serve with distinction, whether securing borders, participating in disaster relief operations, or maintaining peace in challenging environments.

The COAS reiterated that the army is fully prepared for any situation on the Northern and Western borders, with ongoing efforts to strengthen critical infrastructure. He also mentioned the army’s role in contributing to internal security, ensuring a stable and secure India.

General Dwivedi noted that with India progressing towards becoming a ‘Developed India’, the role of the Indian Army is essential. He highlighted the ‘Decade of Transformation’ initiative aimed at improving operational readiness, efficiency, and technological advancements.

The COAS also reaffirmed the army’s commitment to empowering women and supporting the welfare of soldiers, veterans, and their families. He expressed gratitude to the Indian Navy and Air Force for their continuous support and assured the nation that the Indian Army, with the trust of the people, remains ready to face any challenges.

He concluded by stating that the nation is moving forward towards becoming a stronger and more prosperous India.
