New Delhi January 15, 2025: Thick layers of fog caused zero or minimal visibility in several areas across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Wednesday, resulting in delays for multiple trains and over 100 flights. Noida and Ghaziabad experienced zero visibility during the early morning hours amid severe fog and ongoing cold wave conditions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted light rain or drizzle for the capital city on Wednesday. The minimum temperature is expected to hover around 9 degrees Celsius, while the maximum is likely to reach 19 degrees Celsius.
More than 100 flights were delayed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport due to poor visibility, as reported by news agency PTI. However, an airport official clarified that there have been no diversions or cancellations so far.
Earlier, the Delhi Airport issued an advisory for passengers amidst the dense fog. The update, posted on the official X (formerly Twitter) account of Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), stated, “While take-offs and landings continue at Delhi Airport, flights not equipped with CAT III compliance may face disruptions.”
Passengers were advised to contact their respective airlines for updated flight information. The advisory expressed regret for any inconvenience caused.
The CAT III system enables flight operations during low visibility conditions. IndiGo airlines also alerted its passengers, stating, “Fog and low visibility over Delhi may cause delays. We are closely monitoring the weather and striving to ensure you reach your destination safely and smoothly.”
IndiGo urged passengers to stay updated on flight statuses via its website or app. “Our teams are committed to assisting you at every step and providing necessary support,” it added.
Visuals from across Delhi, including Dhaula Kuan, India Gate, Nirankari Colony, and Shankar Vihar, showcased the severity of the dense fog on the roads.
The IMD reported that the predominant surface winds during the morning would originate from the southeast direction at a speed of less than 4 kmph. While wind speeds may increase slightly in the afternoon, they are likely to drop again during the evening and night.
The Delhi-NCR region is expected to experience shallow fog or smog during evening and nighttime hours, the IMD added.
Regions in neighboring states such as Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan are also likely to witness dense to very dense fog conditions on Wednesday, with similar weather persisting over the next 2-3 days.
