Chandigarh, October 17 : Nayab Singh Saini’s political journey has taken an extraordinary turn in 2024, with him becoming the Chief Minister of Haryana twice within a span of just seven months. From a loss in the 2009 state elections to leading the state twice in a single year, the 54-year-old leader’s rise has been nothing short of remarkable. Saini’s political career began on a challenging note in 2009 when he contested from Naraingarh in Ambala district and faced defeat. However, he made a strong comeback in the 2014 assembly elections, riding the wave of the BJP’s success under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. Winning the Naraingarh seat, Saini became a key figure in the state and was later inducted into the cabinet by then-Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

His ascent continued in 2019, when Saini was elected as the Member of Parliament from Kurukshetra, solidifying his position within the BJP. In 2023, he was appointed the Haryana BJP President, further indicating his growing influence. In a surprising move earlier this year, the BJP broke its alliance with the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. This strategic shift also saw the replacement of Khattar with Saini as Chief Minister in March. Saini, not being a member of the assembly at the time, contested and won a by-election from Karnal, the seat vacated by Khattar.
As the state moved towards the assembly elections in October 2024, there was significant speculation about the BJP’s chances of securing another term, especially with growing anti-incumbency sentiment after a decade of rule. Party leader Anil Vij openly expressed his desire to be considered for the Chief Minister’s post, leading to internal discussions. However, the party leadership firmly backed Saini as its leader.

Exit polls predicted a victory for the Congress after the October 5 elections, but Saini confidently dismissed them, claiming that the BJP would return to power. His prediction came true on October 8, when the BJP defied expectations and secured 48 seats in the 90-member assembly, just shy of an outright majority. With support from three independent MLAs, Saini was sworn in as Chief Minister once again, solidifying his role as a key player in Haryana’s political landscape. Saini’s journey from a first-time electoral loss to becoming Chief Minister twice in less than a year highlights his perseverance and the BJP’s trust in his leadership. His ability to navigate Haryana’s political complexities, even in the face of skepticism, underscores his growing influence in the state’s governance
