Former PM KP Sharma Oli Appointed to Head Nepal’s New Coalition Government

Kathmandu, July 15  2024 :  KP Sharma Oli, chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) (CPN-UML) and a former prime minister, was appointed on Sunday evening to lead a new coalition government.

“The president has appointed CPN-UML chairperson Oli as the prime minister under Article 76 (2) of the Constitution,” stated an announcement from the President’s Office.

Oli, along with some ministers, will assume office on Monday morning, according to Kiran Pokharel, press advisor to President Ram Chandra Poudel.

The appointment follows President Poudel’s call on Friday evening for political parties with a majority in the House of Representatives to form a new coalition by Sunday evening. Oli claimed the premiership hours later with the support of the main opposition Nepali Congress party.

The former Prime Minister, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, lost his mandate on Friday afternoon after failing a vote of confidence in the lower house. This development occurred after the CPN-UML withdrew its support from Dahal’s coalition government on July 3 and formed an alliance with the Nepali Congress to establish a new coalition.
