Rahul Dravid has once again demonstrated his character by choosing to forgo half of his INR 5 crore prize money from the BCCI’s reward pool for the T20 World Cup-winning Indian team. After India’s victory over South Africa in the final, the BCCI announced a total reward of Rs. 125 crore to be distributed among the team, coaching staff, and support staff. Dravid, the head coach, was allotted INR 5 crore, while other coaches were to receive Rs. 2.5 crore each.
However, Dravid requested the BCCI to reduce his bonus to Rs. 2.5 crore to ensure equal reward for all coaches, reflecting his desire for fairness and equality. This decision echoes a similar stance he took as the head coach of India’s U-19 World Cup-winning team in 2018, where he insisted on equal distribution of prize money among all support staff.
A BCCI source stated, “Rahul wanted the same bonus money (Rs. 2.5 crore) as the rest of his support staff (bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, fielding coach T Dilip, and batting coach Vikram Rathore). We respect his sentiments.”
Throughout his career, both as a player and a coach, Dravid has consistently prioritized the team’s interests and the welfare of his colleagues, earning him widespread admiration for his selfless approach.
