Hemant Soren Moves Confidence Motion in Jharkhand Assembly Amid Political Tensions

Ranchi, July 8 2024 : Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has moved a confidence motion in the state assembly, aiming to solidify his position amid ongoing political tensions. The Speaker of the Jharkhand Assembly, Rabindra Nath Mahto, allocated an hour for debate on the motion.

Legislators from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Congress, and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) expressed their optimism about passing the floor test. In contrast, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) remains skeptical about the ruling coalition’s ability to secure a majority.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren assumed office on July 4, following the resignation of his predecessor, Champai Soren. Hemant Soren was previously released from jail on June 28 after the Jharkhand High Court granted him bail in a money laundering case related to an alleged land scam. He had resigned as chief minister prior to his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate on January 31.

The 81-member Jharkhand Assembly currently has 76 members. The ruling alliance, consisting of JMM, Congress, and RJD, presented a support list of 44 MLAs to the Governor when Hemant Soren laid claim to forming the government on July 3.

The outcome of the confidence motion will be crucial in determining the stability of the current government amidst the prevailing political dynamics in the state
