A section of an under-construction bridge over the Arga River in Jharkhand’s Giridih district collapsed on Saturday night due to heavy rain, causing a pillar to tilt. The bridge, costing over ₹5 crore, was being built to improve travel between Fatehpur and Bhelwaghati villages. No casualties were reported. The incident occurred in Deori block, about 235 km from Ranchi. Vinay Kumar, Executive Engineer of the Road Construction Department, stated that a single-span girder collapsed and the contractor was instructed to rebuild it. Another official mentioned that the girder casting was done a week ago and needed 28 days to strengthen. Locals reported that heavy rainfall increased the river’s water speed and volume, leading to the collapse. Similar incidents have occurred in neighboring Bihar, with multiple bridge collapses recently reported due to heavy rains.
