PM Seeks Consensus Ahead of Parliament Session, Reminds Opposition of Emergency

New Delhi, June 24,24: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday emphasized the importance of moving forward with “consensus” within the bounds of the Constitution to serve the people of the country. His remarks came ahead of the 18th Lok Sabha session, which began today and will continue until July 3.

“May this session be a productive one. I hope the Opposition fulfills its responsibility in the House and meets people’s expectations of debate and vigilance as opposed to disturbance and drama,” Modi stated.

For the first time in a decade, the BJP has not secured a majority in the lower house. The opposition has frequently highlighted this, aiming to put the Modi 3.0 government on the backfoot. In response, PM Modi reminded the nation of the Emergency, referring to it as “a blot on democracy.” He pointed out that on June 25, it will be 49 years since the entire nation was turned into a jail with rights and freedom usurped by the then Congress government.

“The new generation and future generations will never forgive them for the Emergency,” Modi said. “The Opposition has disappointed so far, but I hope it will do justice to its role in Parliament. People want substance, not slogans; they want debate and diligence, not disturbance,” he added.

Modi also highlighted the significance of the 18th Lok Sabha session starting today, calling it a “glorious day” for parliamentary democracy. He mentioned that this is the first session to be held in the new Parliament building, marking a new era.

“The world’s largest election was conducted in a very grand and glorious manner. This election has also become very important because, for the second time after independence, the people of the country have given an opportunity to the government to serve for the third consecutive time,” he noted.

Modi concluded by expressing hope that the opposition would rise to the occasion and contribute meaningfully to the session.
