Faridabad: The Haryana government has issued eviction notices to nearly 8,000 houses in Faridabad’s Nehru Colony, directing residents to vacate by July 10 to make way for a proposed elevated flyover from Metro Chowk to Sainik Colony Road, aimed at decongesting traffic towards Gurugram. The notices, issued by the Rehabilitation Department, warn that forced evictions will follow if houses are not vacated within the given time. The move has created panic among residents, many of whom claim to have been living in the colony for over five decades and question where they will go if their homes are demolished. The government asserts that these homes were built illegally on 60 acres of land owned by the Rehabilitation Department.

On the other hand, Union Minister of State Krishan Pal Gurjar, addressing villagers affected by the ongoing demolitions on Surajkund Road, assured them that no further demolitions would be allowed in their villages. He acknowledged the pain caused by the destruction so far and promised that homes in the area would now be protected. For the past month, Surajkund Road has witnessed widespread demolition, including the destruction of farmhouses belonging to several influential figures. Critics argue that while private farmhouses—many of which were developed with greenery and landscaping—were demolished, large government constructions like the Surajkund Hotel and Gymkhana Club were left untouched.

This has led to allegations of a double standard and selective action by authorities. Questions are also being raised about how such massive constructions could have taken place without the involvement or negligence of government officials.

Locals claim that if illegal structures were indeed built, it would not have been possible without administrative complicity, and they are now demanding accountability and action against the responsible officers. Tehsildar Vijay Singh of the Rehabilitation Department confirmed that the matter is with senior officials and assured that no demolition will take place until further instructions are received, adding that residents had previously been warned multiple times but failed to respond positively. As tensions mount, the situation in both Nehru Colony and along Surajkund Road remains sensitive, with affected families caught between the fear of losing their homes and hope for legal or political reprieve.
