New Delhi, March 5:: Krishnamurthy V. Subramanian, former Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India, has become the first Indian economist to receive the prestigious Alumni Award for Professional Achievement from the University of Chicago. The honour marks a historic milestone in the award’s 85-year history.
The award recognises Subramanian’s contributions to economic policymaking and research, particularly during his tenure as India’s Chief Economic Adviser between 2018 and 2021. During this period, he authored three editions of the government’s Economic Survey, which outlined policy reforms and strategies for long-term economic growth.
The university also highlighted his analysis during the COVID-19 crisis, where he argued that the economic shock was largely supply-side and projected a potential V-shaped recovery for India’s economy. His work was seen as influential in shaping economic policy discussions during a period of global uncertainty.
After leaving the government, Subramanian represented India as Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund and later returned to academia. He currently serves as a professor of finance at the Indian School of Business.
Subramanian earned his PhD from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and is also an alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and Indian Institute of Management Calcutta.
With this recognition, he joins a distinguished list of past recipients that includes globally renowned scholars and Nobel laureates, highlighting his growing influence in the field of economics.
