Several Indians Return from Protest-Hit Iran on Commercial Flights

New Delhi | January 17, 2026- Several Indian nationals, including students, have returned to India on commercial flights from Iran as the country remains gripped by widespread protests and a strong government crackdown. The arrivals took place late Friday night at the Indira Gandhi International Airport amid growing concerns over safety conditions in the region.

Those who returned said they did not face direct difficulties during their stay, though communication disruptions, including internet shutdowns, caused anxiety among families back home. A medical student from Shiraz said the situation in her city remained largely calm, adding that many students chose to return independently using commercial flights rather than through a government-led evacuation.

Relatives waiting at the airport expressed relief as passengers arrived safely. Several families said they had registered with the Indian Embassy in Tehran following official advisories and were in regular contact whenever communication channels were available.

The Ministry of External Affairs has stated that around 9,000 Indian nationals are currently in Iran, most of them students. Others include sailors, pilgrims and business professionals. In view of the deteriorating situation, the government has issued multiple advisories urging Indians to avoid travel to Iran and advising those currently there to leave using available commercial options.

Officials said India is closely monitoring developments and remains prepared to take all necessary steps to ensure the safety and welfare of its citizens if the situation escalates further.
