India End Campaign in Third Place as Uppal Points to Costly Start

Early setbacks deny India qualification despite strong finish against Korea

New Delhi: India wrapped up its campaign in the Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania Group I with a third-place finish, falling short of qualification for the World Group Play-offs.

Team captain Vishal Uppal reflected on the campaign, saying a brief period of poor performance early in the tournament proved decisive in the final standings.

India entered the competition with hopes of finishing in the top two but suffered an early setback against Thailand, which ultimately affected their chances. Uppal noted that the team’s performance in the opening phase of the tournament was below expectations and difficult to recover from.

Thailand and Indonesia secured the top two positions, booking their spots for the next stage.

India’s campaign saw moments of promise, including a strong 2-1 win over South Korea in their final tie. However, close defeats against key opponents meant the team could not accumulate enough wins to qualify.

Matches against Thailand and Indonesia were particularly crucial, with India unable to capitalise on opportunities in tightly contested encounters.

Senior player Ankita Raina described representing the country as a unique experience, emphasizing the pride and responsibility it brings. She acknowledged that while she created chances in her matches, results did not always go in her favour.

Young players like Vaishnavi Adkar also took positives from the tournament, highlighting improvements in handling pressure situations as the week progressed.

The doubles pairing of Ankita Raina and Rutuja Bhosale showed promise, with both players keen to continue their partnership in upcoming competitions, including preparations for the Asian Games.

Uppal stressed that while the team narrowly missed qualification, the experience gained would be valuable. He pointed out the need for younger players to build mental strength and physical endurance to compete consistently at higher levels.

Despite the setback, the captain expressed confidence in the squad’s future, stating that the team has the potential to improve and deliver stronger performances in the coming tournaments.
