The Indian contingent returned home with seven medals – 1 Gold, 4 Silver, and 2 Bronze – along with a third prize in the International Geoscience Youth Movement (I-GYM) Reporter category.

They were mentored by Prof. Devesh Walia and Prof. Hema Achyuthan, with Dr. Jagvir Singh, Scientist-G, as observer.

Congratulating the winners, Dr. Singh said their success mirrors the rising aspirations of India’s youth, particularly from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, inspired by the nation’s startup boom over the last decade.

He emphasized how the National Education Policy (NEP-2020) has broken traditional academic boundaries, allowing students to venture into new and dynamic areas such as Earth Sciences, Biotechnology, Space Technology, and start-up-based entrepreneurship.

Dr. Singh encouraged students to benefit from government initiatives like Vigyan Jyoti, research fellowships, scholarships, and innovation grants, and urged them to apply their knowledge to real-world challenges beyond competitions.|

Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Dr. M. Ravichandran, explained that the Ministry organizes the Indian National Earth Science Olympiad (INESO) at over 300 centres across India each year. From nearly 30 shortlisted candidates, four are chosen to represent the country at IESO. He noted India’s consistently strong performance in recent editions.

Launched in 2003 by the International Geoscience Education Organization (IGEO), the IESO is a global Olympiad for students of Classes IX–XII. India has been a participant since 2007 and proudly hosted the 10th edition in Mysore in 2013.

Dr. Singh concluded by encouraging the young medalists to carry forward their scientific curiosity to solve pressing issues for the greater good of society.
