New Delhi- The INDIA bloc announced today the nomination of former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy as its consensus candidate for the upcoming Vice Presidential election. Addressing the media, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge described the contest as an “ideological battle” and underscored the need for Opposition unity to uphold the values enshrined in India’s Constitution.
Kharge highlighted Reddy’s distinguished legal career, noting his tenure as a judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, and judge of the Supreme Court of India. “Justice Reddy has consistently championed social, economic, and political justice throughout his career,” he stated. The Congress leader added that the Opposition’s joint nomination reflects a shared commitment to protecting democratic principles under challenge.
Born on 8 July 1946, Justice Reddy began his legal practice in 1971 at the Andhra Pradesh High Court, primarily handling civil and writ matters. He served as Government Pleader from 1988 to 1990 and briefly as Additional Standing Counsel for the Central Government, also advising Osmania University. He was appointed a permanent judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 1995, elevated to Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court in 2005, and joined the Supreme Court in 2007.
The Vice Presidential poll, scheduled for 9 September, follows the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on 21 July due to health concerns. Justice Reddy will face NDA’s nominee, CP Radhakrishnan, in what is shaping up to be a closely watched contest reflecting broader ideological differences.
