Bengaluru– India has achieved a historic milestone in global telecommunications with the inauguration of the first-ever 3GPP Radio Access Networks (RAN) Working Group meetings in Bengaluru on 25th August 2025. Organized with the support of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications, and hosted by the Telecommunications Standards Development Society, India (TSDSI), the event marks the first time India is directly hosting discussions on 6G standardization under 3GPP Release 20. The week-long meetings will also oversee the finalization of Release 19 specifications, paving the way for the global advancement of 5G Advanced technologies.
The Government of India has extended strong institutional and financial support to this initiative, reaffirming its commitment to shaping the future of global communication standards. A DoT delegation is actively participating in the Bengaluru meetings, underlining India’s growing role in driving the 6G vision. For Indian researchers, telecom companies, and academic institutions, this is a landmark opportunity to contribute to global telecom standards while engaging with international experts without the barrier of overseas travel.
TSDSI, the recognized Standards Development Organization (SDO) of India and one of the seven organizational partners of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), has taken the lead in hosting the event. As part of 3GPP, TSDSI plays a vital role in shaping the specifications that form the backbone of mobile communication technologies worldwide. The Bengaluru meetings therefore represent a new phase in India’s journey toward strengthening its influence in global telecom ecosystems.
The meetings have witnessed unprecedented global participation, with more than 1,500 delegates from over 50 countries, including leading telecom companies, research institutions, and technical experts. This record attendance highlights both the significance of these deliberations and the increasing global interest in the evolution from 5G to 6G. The discussions will lay the foundation for next-generation technologies, setting the stage for advanced applications that will transform industries, governance, and everyday life.
Hosting the 3GPP meetings in India has wider implications for the country’s technology landscape. It provides Indian organizations with a rare opportunity to collaborate in real time with global stakeholders, gain first-hand experience of the standardization process, and influence the future course of telecom technologies. Moreover, it is expected to foster deeper industry-academia partnerships, promote domestic innovation, and create pathways for India’s growing role as a leader in the global telecom standards ecosystem.
By bringing the 3GPP deliberations to Bengaluru, India has signaled a shift in global standard-setting dynamics. Emerging technology leaders such as India are now taking center stage, contributing not just as adopters but as shapers of the next wave of communications technologies. This event, marking India’s first-ever hosting of 3GPP RAN Working Group meetings, will be remembered as a decisive step in aligning India’s telecom aspirations with global leadership in 6G innovation.
