New Delhi, June 25- In a strategic move to expand the applications of the FASTag system beyond toll collection, the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), promoted by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), organized a workshop with leading FinTech companies in New Delhi today. The initiative aimed to explore innovative uses of FASTag technology and gather inputs from financial technology stakeholders on regulatory compliance, user convenience, grievance redressal, and non-toll use cases.

The workshop was graced by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari; Minister of State Ajay Tamta; MoRTH Secretary V. Umashankar; Department of Financial Services Secretary M. Nagaraju; RBI Executive Director P. Vasudevan; and NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav. Senior officials from MoRTH, NHAI, IHMCL, and representatives from top FinTech companies also attended the session.

Addressing the workshop, Nitin Gadkari emphasized the need to unlock the broader potential of FASTag.

“The FASTag ecosystem offers more than tolling; it can power a seamless digital travel experience across India. Collaboration with FinTechs will help transform FASTag into a multi-purpose platform that improves mobility, ensures convenience, and enhances overall efficiency in the transport sector,” Gadkari said.

V. Umashankar noted that while FASTag revolutionized electronic toll collection, there remains scope to make the system even more secure, convenient, and fraud-free.

“FinTech innovations combined with government facilitation can build a digital product that redefines the road user experience,” he added.

Redefining Tolling with FinTech Synergy

NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav stated that the workshop would serve as a launchpad for innovation that goes beyond tolling.

“This is a unique opportunity to co-create solutions that meet the evolving needs of highway users,” he said.

Adding to this, Vishal Chauhan, Member (Administration), NHAI, remarked that the FinTech ecosystem is the vanguard of innovation and its integration with highway infrastructure can significantly boost user experience.

Exploring New Use Cases for FASTag

The workshop featured a series of industry-led sessions discussing new frontiers for FASTag usage, including:

  • EV Charging Integration

  • Smart Parking Solutions

  • Insurance Payments

  • Cashless Vehicle Services

  • Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) Tolling

Participants discussed how FASTag could be used for flexible payments and as a core component of connected mobility infrastructure. Industry experts also demonstrated use cases involving RFID readers and ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras to support MLFF tolling — a barrierless system where tolls are automatically deducted without stopping vehicles.

FASTag Growth and the Road Ahead

The workshop highlighted the rapid adoption of the NETC FASTag program, which now records 98.5% of all toll payments digitally across 1,728 toll plazas — including 1,113 on National Highways and 615 on State Highways. Over 11.04 crore FASTags have been issued by 38 partner banks, signifying widespread public adoption.

With this workshop, IHMCL and NHAI signaled a major push toward building a future-ready, digitally integrated national highway network, leveraging technology, partnerships, and data-driven governance to improve transparency and convenience for all road users.
