New Delhi, 28 January 2026: The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) today kicked off its landmark Vande Mataram Coastal Cyclothon–2026, a month-long national outreach initiative, with a virtual flag-off from the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi. The event was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Shri Nityanand Rai, marking the start of a 25-day movement covering India’s extensive coastline.
The Cyclothon, held in commemoration of 150 years of the iconic song ‘Vande Mataram’, is part of CISF’s ongoing efforts to involve communities in coastal security and national awareness campaigns. Two cycling teams set off simultaneously from Bakkhali in West Bengal and Lakhpat in Gujarat, together covering nearly 6,500 kilometres, traversing nine coastal states and two Union Territories, and concluding in Kochi on 22 February 2026.

Strengthening Coastal Security Through Citizen Engagement
Speaking at the launch, Nityanand Rai highlighted the crucial role of local communities in securing India’s coastlines. “Coastal safety is not the sole responsibility of security agencies. Public participation, especially by coastal residents, is essential to safeguard the nation,” he said. The minister also emphasized that the Cyclothon reinforces the government’s broader maritime vision under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s SAGAR initiative (Security and Growth for All in the Region), aligned with the theme ‘Surakshit Tat, Samriddh Bharat’.

CISF has been recognized as a Security Organization under the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS), positioning it at the forefront of India’s maritime and port safety framework. Shri Rai stated that the Cyclothon serves as a platform to translate the patriotic spirit of Vande Mataram into practical action by involving citizens in safeguarding India’s vital maritime frontiers.
Comprehensive Community and Youth Engagement
During their journey, the cycling teams will stop at 52 coastal villages, which will be “adopted” by CISF for sustained engagement throughout the year. Activities include community welfare programs, awareness campaigns on drug trafficking, weapons smuggling, and environmental protection, along with sports, cultural events, and youth interaction initiatives. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts by partners such as ONGC and port authorities will support local development.

A notable feature of this year’s Cyclothon is gender inclusivity: 50 percent of the participating cyclists are women, reflecting a strong emphasis on women empowerment and fitness-led public engagement. The event also encourages youth participation through recruitment drives, educational outreach, and campaigns promoting healthy lifestyles and civic responsibility.
Celebrating Heritage and National Unity
The Cyclothon underscores the historical and cultural importance of India’s coastal regions, honoring fishermen and coastal communities as custodians of the nation’s maritime heritage. It also commemorates freedom fighters and security personnel who contributed to national unity and service. Major public events are scheduled in Mumbai, Goa, Mangaluru, Konark, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, and finally Kochi, where citizens and dignitaries will actively participate in awareness and fitness programs.
CISF Vande Mataram Coastal Cyclothon–2026 aligns with India’s long-term vision of Viksit Bharat @2047, focusing on empowered coastal communities, citizen fitness, environmental stewardship, and maritime security. By linking heritage, civic responsibility, and community participation, the initiative aims to inspire a vigilant, healthy, and engaged citizenry committed to national development.
