India AI Impact Summit 2026: Casebook on AI and Gender Empowerment Launched by MeitY & UN Women

New Delhi | February 27, 2026: A landmark publication, the Casebook on AI and Gender Empowerment, was launched at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, highlighting innovative and practical AI solutions that advance gender equality across the Global South.

The casebook was developed under the IndiaAI Mission of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), in partnership with UN Women and supported by the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MoWCD). It features 23 real-world AI applications selected from more than 233 submissions across 50 countries. These initiatives demonstrate measurable impact in key areas, including healthcare, economic empowerment, digital safety, climate resilience, access to justice, and education.

The publication was formally launched by  S. Krishnan, Secretary, MeitY; Anil Malik, Secretary, MoWCD; and Ms. Christine Arab, Regional Director, UN Women Asia and the Pacific. The casebook provides a comprehensive resource for policymakers, researchers, technology developers, and practitioners, offering evidence-based examples of gender-responsive AI interventions.

The casebook also received international attention when UN Secretary-General António Guterres visited the UN Women stall at the JanAI Expo on February 20, 2026. During his visit, he engaged with young women from rural India pursuing STEM careers through the WeSTEM project, a UN Women initiative in collaboration with state governments, the European Union, Micron, Nokia, and the Head Held High Foundation. A copy of the casebook was presented to him by Kanta Singh, Country Representative a.i. of UN Women, in the presence of Amandeep Singh Gill, Under-Secretary-General and the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology.

The casebook highlights AI solutions that were selected through a rigorous multi-stage evaluation based on real-world deployment, measurable gender impact, and evidence-based outcomes. The publication covers critical sectors such as menstrual health, financial inclusion, digital safety, sustainable agriculture, access to legal services, and education and skills development. It serves as a practical guide for ensuring AI systems are ethical, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of women and girls.

This initiative reflects India’s vision of democratic AI diffusion nd the government’s commitment to integrating gender-responsive principles across the Seven Chakras of the IndiaAI Mission.

By bringing together global examples of gender-responsive AI, the casebook reinforces India’s leadership in responsible artificial intelligence and highlights how technology can be leveraged to empower women and drive equitable development across the Global South.
