Bihar’s rich cultural heritage is taking center stage at the 7th edition of the Prime Minister’s Mementos e-Auction, where 40 exquisite folk art pieces from the state are now up for bidding. Organized by the Ministry of Culture through the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), Delhi, the auction allows art enthusiasts and collectors to own mementos gifted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Proceeds from the auction support the Namami Gange Project, dedicated to the holy River Ganga.

Madhubani Magic: Krishna and the Gopis

One of the highlights is a Madhubani painting of Lord Krishna with the Gopis, originating from the Mithila region of Bihar. Known for its bold lines, intricate patterns, and vibrant natural colors, this artwork captures divine love and spiritual harmony in a timeless folk-art style. A true collector’s gem, it offers a rare chance to own a piece of India’s enduring artistic legacy.

Vibrant Mithila Portrait: Woman with Lotus and Shiva Lingam

Another standout is a Mithila painting of a woman holding a lotus flower alongside a Shiva Lingam. Painted on paper with poster colors, the artwork reflects the region’s iconic line-work and traditional motifs. Its vibrant hues and symbolic imagery make it a beautiful celebration of both culture and devotion.

Sikki Art Elegance: Lord Ram and Sita

Bihar’s Sikki art tradition is represented through an intricate frame of Lord Ram and Sita, presented to the Prime Minister by Sanjay Saraogi, MLA from Darbhanga. The delicate golden details against a dark background highlight the divine couple’s grace and strength, showcasing the artist’s exceptional craftsmanship.

Living Heritage in Every Stroke

Beyond these masterpieces, Bihar’s auction collection includes artworks inspired by mythological tales, festivals, rituals, and daily life, all rendered in the state’s distinctive symmetrical and colorful styles. Many of these art forms continue to be practiced by local women and communities, preserving oral traditions and social memory for generations.

All items are available for public viewing at NGMA, Delhi, and for online bidding at pmmementos.gov.in until October 2, 2025. Whether you’re an art collector or a cultural enthusiast, this is a rare opportunity to bring home a piece of India’s folk heritage.
