In his letter, Siddaramaiah said the shortage appears to have arisen after directives prioritised domestic LPG supply, which may have unintentionally disrupted the availability of cylinders meant for commercial establishments. He noted that several hotel and restaurant associations have reported difficulties in procuring cylinders, raising concerns about the possibility of temporary closures if supplies are not restored soon.
The chief minister emphasised that Bengaluru has a large network of small eateries, mess facilities and catering units that serve lakhs of people every day. Many students and working professionals living away from their families depend on these establishments for regular meals. He also pointed out that wedding halls, hostels and event venues rely heavily on commercial LPG for food preparation and could face disruptions if the shortage continues.
Siddaramaiah urged the Union minister to direct oil marketing companies to ensure adequate supply of commercial LPG cylinders to restaurants, hotels, community halls and other commercial users. He said prompt action would help businesses continue operations smoothly while preventing inconvenience to thousands of residents who rely on these services daily.
Concerns over commercial LPG supply have also been raised by industry groups. The National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) warned that any prolonged disruption in cylinder supply could severely impact restaurant operations and potentially lead to widespread closures in the sector.
The issue comes amid broader energy supply pressures linked to global geopolitical tensions, which have also influenced LPG production priorities and fuel availability in recent weeks.
