Tibetan Government-in-Exile Marks India’s 79th Independence Day, Reaffirms Hope for Tibet’s Freedom

The Tibetan government-in-exile celebrated India’s 79th Independence Day in Dharamshala on Thursday with a strong message of gratitude to India and renewed hope for Tibet’s eventual freedom.

At Gangkyi Park, officiating Sikyong (President) Tharlam Dolma Changra hoisted the Indian national flag alongside Tibetan flags held by members of the community. She thanked the Indian government and its people for their unwavering support, saying, “India means a lot to the Tibetans… Truth always prevails. When you go through a tunnel, you’ll find a light at the end.”

Sending a direct message to China, she emphasized that Tibetans possess an “indomitable spirit” and cannot be easily crushed. “With the truth as our weapon, we strongly believe that we will definitely get back our country,” she asserted, expressing confidence that Tibet’s cause will endure despite China’s growing strength.

The event, attended by officials, staff, and members of the Tibetan diaspora, symbolized the deep bonds between India and the Tibetan community in exile.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the nation from the Red Fort in Delhi, unveiled ambitious plans under his vision for a “Naya Bharat,” including India’s first semiconductor chip, new jet engine development, a ₹1 lakh crore youth employment initiative, and a major expansion of the nuclear program, aiming to make India a developed nation by 2047.

Independence Day greetings poured in from around the globe, reflecting India’s rising international stature and the enduring values of freedom and solidarity it shares with communities like the Tibetans.
