Moscow, June 13– In a strong statement following Israeli airstrikes on Iran, Russia has squarely blamed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Western nations for fueling tensions that led to the crisis. Calling the agency’s stance on Iran’s nuclear program “paranoia,” Moscow accused the West of provoking anti-Iran sentiment, which has now culminated in what it described as a “tragedy.”
Citing Russian state media outlet TASS, the Foreign Ministry expressed hope that Western powers, who pushed an “opportunistic” anti-Iran resolution through the IAEA Board of Governors, would now acknowledge the disastrous consequences of their actions. “This resolution,” the Ministry stated, “was driven by political phobias and failed to gain universal support.”
Russia further criticized Israel for deliberately escalating the conflict, asserting:
“Responsibility for all the consequences of this provocation will rest on the Israeli leadership.”
It also revealed that IAEA personnel and Iranian civilians were caught in the line of fire, suggesting that the agency itself has suffered due to the fallout of its own decisions. Russia called on IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi to present a balanced, objective analysis of the attacks and assess the potential radiation risks from strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
The statement highlights growing geopolitical polarization over Iran’s nuclear program and increasing concern over nuclear safety in the region.
