FBI: Colorado Flamethrower Attack Was a Targeted Act of Terrorism

At least six people were injured in a disturbing flamethrower attack during a rally in support of Israeli hostages in Gaza, held at the Park Street Mall in Boulder, Colorado, on Sunday. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has labeled the incident a “targeted terror attack,” and federal agents have joined local law enforcement in a full-scale investigation.

According to authorities, the suspect—identified as 45-year-old Mohamed Sabry Soliman—was apprehended at the scene. Witnesses reported that Soliman used a makeshift flamethrower to ignite the crowd while shouting “Free Palestine” before being subdued by mall security and police officers present nearby.

Mark Michalek, the FBI Special Agent in charge of the Denver Field Office, confirmed that Soliman is in custody and said investigators believe the assault was politically motivated. “This was a targeted act of terror intended to intimidate and harm peaceful demonstrators,” Michalek said during a late-evening press briefing. He added that the FBI is working closely with local agencies to gather evidence and determine if Soliman had ties to any extremist groups or acted alone.

Medical officials stated that six individuals suffered varying degrees of burns, with two in critical condition and undergoing treatment at Boulder Medical Center’s trauma unit. The remaining four victims are stable but will require ongoing care. Emergency services responded within minutes of the attack, and a section of the Park Street Mall has been cordoned off for forensic investigation.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis condemned the attack and expressed solidarity with the victims. “Violence has no place in our democracy, especially when aimed at those exercising their right to peaceful assembly,” he said in a statement. “Our hearts are with the victims and their families.”

The incident has sparked a wave of reactions across social media, with community leaders, advocacy groups, and politicians calling for calm and denouncing political violence. Jewish and pro-Israel groups have demanded enhanced security at future events, citing growing concerns over antisemitic and anti-Israel rhetoric turning into violent acts.
