New Delhi, March 28 ,2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep concern over the aftermath of a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar, with strong tremors also impacting Thailand. He assured that India is fully prepared to extend all possible assistance to both nations.
In a post on X, PM Modi stated that he has directed Indian authorities to be on high alert and instructed the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to remain in close contact with the governments of Myanmar and Thailand to coordinate relief efforts.
“Deeply concerned about the earthquake that struck Myanmar and the tremors felt in Thailand. Praying for the safety and well-being of all. India stands ready to provide any necessary assistance. I have asked our authorities to stay on standby and the MEA to coordinate with the governments of Myanmar and Thailand.”
According to BBC reports, the epicenter of the 7.7 magnitude earthquake was located 16 km (10 miles) northwest of Sagaing in central Myanmar, at a depth of 10 km. The tremors were powerful enough to be felt across Thailand and southwest China.
The earthquake has caused significant damage in both countries. Buildings in Bangkok have been impacted, while roads in Myanmar’s capital, Naypyidaw, have suffered severe cracks and structural damage. The Thai government has convened an emergency meeting to assess the situation.
This disaster comes just ahead of the BIMSTEC Summit, scheduled to be held in Bangkok on April 4, where leaders from BIMSTEC nations, including PM Modi, are expected to participate
