The conflict between Israel and Iran has sharply intensified, entering its third consecutive day of military engagement. On Sunday, both nations launched fresh aerial assaults, raising global concerns over the potential for a broader regional war in West Asia.
According to official statements from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Israeli warplanes conducted a large-scale offensive targeting strategic Iranian sites, including facilities linked to the Defence Ministry and the SPND nuclear research project. The IDF claimed that one of the locations struck included a storage site believed to have housed Iran’s nuclear archives.
The latest offensive follows the launch of Operation “Rising Lion” by Israel on Friday, an action described by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a preemptive measure to neutralize what he termed the “existential threat posed by Iran.” Addressing the nation, Netanyahu asserted, “This operation will continue for as many days as necessary to eliminate this threat.”
Meanwhile, air raid sirens were sounded in key Israeli cities, including Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, as Iran launched a retaliatory barrage of missile and drone strikes. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed that it targeted Israeli energy installations and military-grade aviation fuel production facilities, marking a significant escalation in the type and scope of strategic assets now being attacked.
In a related development, former U.S. President Donald Trump weighed in on the ongoing hostilities, calling on Iranian leadership to consider re-engaging in nuclear negotiations. Speaking from a campaign event, Trump said, “Iran must make a deal before there is nothing left,” underscoring the urgency of diplomatic resolution amid rising hostilities.
The continuing military exchanges have raised alarms within the international community, with several global powers urging restraint on both sides. The conflict has already begun to impact global oil prices and is threatening to destabilize the already fragile security situation in the Middle East.
While no immediate ceasefire appears to be on the horizon, sources suggest that behind-the-scenes diplomatic efforts are underway, with several countries reportedly offering to mediate. However, the situation remains highly volatile.
