Rajkummar Rao Set to Portray Sourav Ganguly in Upcoming Biopic

Kolkata: Former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly has confirmed that Bollywood actor Rajkummar Rao will portray him in his much-anticipated biopic. Speaking to the media in Bardhaman, West Bengal, Ganguly revealed that while Rao is set to play the titular role, scheduling conflicts have delayed the film’s release by over a year.

Ganguly, fondly known as the “Prince of Kolkata,” is regarded as one of the most influential figures in Indian cricket. During his illustrious career, he represented India in 113 Tests and 311 ODIs, scoring more than 18,500 international runs. As captain, he led India to 21 Test victories and played a crucial role in steering the team to the final of the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup. Post-retirement in 2008, Ganguly transitioned into cricket administration, serving as the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) and later heading the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The announcement of Rajkummar Rao’s involvement in the biopic has generated excitement among both cricket and cinema enthusiasts. Known for his versatility and dedication to his craft, Rao is expected to bring Ganguly’s journey—from a young boy in Kolkata to a cricketing icon—to life on the silver screen.

On the professional front, Rajkummar Rao has a busy schedule with multiple projects lined up. He will soon be seen in Bhool Chuk Maaf, a quirky romantic comedy where he stars alongside Wamiqa Gabbi. Directed by Karan Sharma and produced by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films in collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios, the film features Rao’s character caught in a time loop, reliving the same day of his wedding ceremonies. The teaser, which incorporates the popular song “Chor Bazaari” from Love Aaj Kal (2009), has already piqued audience interest.

Additionally, Rajkummar Rao is gearing up for the release of Maalik, slated to hit theaters on June 20, 2025. Produced by Kumar Taurani of Tips Films and Jay Shewakramani’s Northern Lights Films, Maalik promises to showcase Rao in a compelling role, further cementing his status as one of Bollywood’s most talented actors.
