SAD Delhi Unit Appeals to CBFC to Halt Release of Kangana’s Film ‘Emergency’

New Delhi : The Shiromani Akali Dal’s Delhi unit has urged the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to prevent the release of Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming film Emergency, which is set to premiere on September 6. The film, in which Ranaut portrays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has faced scrutiny from the party due to concerns over its potential to incite communal unrest and disseminate misinformation.

In a formal letter sent to the CBFC on Wednesday, Paramjit Singh Sarna, the Delhi president of the Shiromani Akali Dal, raised serious objections regarding the film’s depiction of historical events. Sarna criticized the film’s trailer for presenting what he describes as “erroneous historical facts” that he believes misrepresent the Sikh community and foster hatred and social discord.

Sarna and his party argue that the film’s portrayal of sensitive historical and communal issues is not only inaccurate but also biased. They contend that such portrayals could exacerbate existing social tensions and contribute to further divisions within society. This perspective highlights the challenges involved in accurately and sensitively representing historical events and figures, particularly those related to communal and cultural sensitivities.

The Shiromani Akali Dal’s request for a review by the CBFC reflects broader concerns about the impact of media portrayals on public perception and social harmony.
