New Delhi: Akshay Kumar’s return to the comedy genre with Housefull 5 has delivered a major box office win. The film, directed by Tarun Mansukhani and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, earned ₹23 crore nett on its opening day in India, marking one of the strongest starts for the actor in recent years.

After a challenging 2024 with underperforming films such as Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Khel Khel Mein, and Sarfira, Kumar’s latest release shows clear signs of a career rebound. His 2025 also had a slow start with Sky Force, but the positive reception to Kesari 2 was a brief revival. Now, Housefull 5 appears poised to build on that momentum with widespread audience appeal.

With this opening figure, Housefull 5 becomes Akshay Kumar’s fourth-highest Day 1 grosser, behind Mission Mangal (₹29.16 crore), Sooryavanshi (₹26.29 crore), and Gold (₹25.25 crore). It has already outpaced the opening of Kesari Chapter 2, which collected ₹7.75 crore on its first day.

The film released in two formats — Housefull 5A and Housefull 5B — both in Hindi, possibly catering to different edit preferences. Among these, version A drew stronger footfall with overall occupancy reaching 28.88% and peak evening shows crossing 45%. Version B saw a comparatively modest 16% average occupancy, with night shows at 27.18%.

Despite a sluggish start to the morning screenings, overall turnout gained momentum throughout the day. The wide release across over 5,000 screens globally and high frequency of daily shows (in some cases, up to 21 screenings per theatre) contributed to the robust opening figures.

Trade analysts estimate that the film, made on a reported ₹225 crore budget, will need to generate approximately ₹450 crore globally to break even. The current response, along with positive audience buzz, indicates that Housefull 5 is well positioned to maintain strong performance through the weekend and potentially beyond.

The coming days will determine whether this film can sustain its success and become one of the top earners of the year for both Akshay Kumar and Bollywood’s comedy genre.
