Union Health Ministry Releases National Guidelines on Medical Oxygen Management

New Delhi, March 27, 2025: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare today introduced the National Guidelines on Medical Oxygen Management at a workshop held at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi. The event also marked the launch of the National Capacity Building Programme on Oxygen Management, which will be led by the Department of Hospital Administration at AIIMS, Delhi.

Union Health Secretary Smt. Punya Salila Srivastava, addressing the gathering, highlighted the importance of maintaining and utilizing medical oxygen infrastructure efficiently to ensure readiness for any future emergencies. She also stressed the significance of incorporating lessons learned from India’s COVID-19 response to strengthen preparedness.

Prof. M. Srinivas, Director of AIIMS, emphasized the institute’s pivotal role in spearheading the training initiative, underscoring the need for comprehensive training programs at all levels of healthcare to improve oxygen management.

The National Guidelines on Medical Oxygen Management provide a structured framework for the procurement, storage, and administration of medical oxygen, focusing on patient safety, capacity building, and emergency response preparedness.

The National Capacity Building Programme on Oxygen Management, an initiative of the Disaster Management Cell under the Health Ministry, aims to train 200 master trainers across India. These trainers will further educate hospital administrators and medical officers on efficient oxygen handling, reducing wastage, and improving clinical outcomes.

This initiative marks a significant step in strengthening India’s medical oxygen infrastructure, ensuring uniform best practices across healthcare facilities nationwide.
