Government Initiatives to Enhance Education for Disadvantaged Groups

New Delhi, August 7, 2024:  The government has reaffirmed its commitment to uplifting the educational status of students across India, particularly focusing on rural and underprivileged areas. Aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Ministry of Education has launched various schemes to ensure equitable access to quality education for all.

One of the flagship initiatives, the Samagra Shiksha scheme, launched in 2018-19, aims to provide inclusive and quality education from pre-school to class 12. This integrated centrally sponsored scheme supports States and Union Territories with grants for library facilities, sports, free uniforms, textbooks, and digital initiatives. Additionally, it provides remedial teaching and leadership development programs, focusing on diverse academic needs and backgrounds.

For children with special needs, Samagra Shiksha offers financial assistance for aids, appliances, Braille kits, and stipends for disabled girl students. The scheme is aligned with NEP 2020 to enhance educational quality through new pedagogical and curricular structures, foundational literacy, and competency-based learning.

In higher education, measures include the National Credit Framework, Academic Bank of Credit, and courses in Indian languages. The government promotes industry-academia collaboration and offers courses aligned with societal needs.The Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA), launched in June 2023, targets underserved areas with an outlay of Rs. 12,926.10 crore until 2025-26. It prioritizes focus districts based on criteria such as low Gross Enrolment Ratio and representation of disadvantaged groups.
