Record-Breaking Crowd Throngs Surajkund International Crafts Mela

Over 11.70 Lakh Tourists Visit Surajkund Mela in Just 10 Days

Faridabad, February 16: The 38th edition of the world’s largest crafts fair, the Surajkund International Crafts Mela, witnessed an unprecedented surge in visitors on Sunday, drawing a record-breaking crowd. In just ten days, the fair has attracted 11.70 lakh tourists, bringing it tantalizingly close to surpassing last year’s total of 13 lakh visitors, with the event set to continue until February 23.

Sharing this remarkable update, Heritage and Tourism Minister Dr. Arvind Sharma announced that the Mela welcomed 2 lakh visitors on Sunday alone. Crowds thronged cultural stages such as the Big Chaupal, Small Chaupal, Natyashala, and various pavilions, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere. The minister highlighted that while last year’s edition drew 13 lakh people, this year’s footfall is expected to break all previous records, with seven days still remaining.

Dr. Sharma credited the vision of PM Narendra Modi and the leadership of Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini for promoting national unity, art, and culture through such grand initiatives. Under the CM’s guidance, the 38th Surajkund International Crafts Mela has embraced technological advancements and creative innovations, propelling its success despite weather fluctuations, exams, and other challenges.

The introduction of online ticketing has made it easier for visitors to gain entry, while an online stall allocation system for artisans and weavers has ensured transparency and wider participation. This seamless system has allowed the public to explore and purchase unique products from a diverse range of craftspeople.

The dual theme states this year, Odisha and Madhya Pradesh, have also drawn immense interest. Additionally, stalls from BIMSTEC partner countries—India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Myanmar—have attracted heavy crowds. The cultural extravaganza continues to delight visitors, with over 50 international artists performing at the Big Chaupal and regional cultural showcases captivating audiences at the Small Chaupal.

Tourism Minister Dr. Arvind Sharma emphasized that star performances on the grand stage each evening have further fueled the fair’s allure. He assured that the fair management will make every effort to enhance the visitor experience over the remaining seven days.

Dr. Sharma expressed gratitude to Principal Secretary of Heritage and Tourism, Kala Ramachandran, Managing Director of Haryana Tourism Corporation Ltd., Dr. Sunil Kumar, the Department of Information, Public Relations, and Languages, as well as the Arts and Cultural Department. He praised their collective dedication to providing every possible facility to tourists, ensuring that the 38th Surajkund International Crafts Mela sets a new benchmark for success and cultural celebration.
